Fields of interest: Forced migration, migration, civil society, ethnicity Brekke has his doctorate in sociology from the University of Oslo. His main areas of interest are refugees and migration. How are the policies in these areas developed? How do these conditions influence the experience of the individuals that arrive? In several studies Brekke have shed light upon these questions from various angles. But Brekke's field of interest is broad. His production also includes studies on the workings of the civil society and the conditions for voluntary activity. The most recent study in this area looks into the challenge that the alternative culture of snowboarders represent to the established central organization for sports in Norway. Brekke is also interested in ethnomethodology - i.e. the finer workings of face to face encounters. One study here analyses the informal interaction at diplomatic receptions. In addition to this, Brekke has explored topics on the fringes of the methodology of the social sciences. For example he has published on the use of photography as part of data-gathering among sensitive informants and on the use of interpreters in qualitative interviews. |
