This report focuses on occupational exit among registered nurses and practical nurses. This study shows that registered nurses are very stable workers. Ten years after they have completed their training, nine of ten individuals still work as nurses. The occupational exit rates are higher among practical nurses, and especially male nurses and women without children leave the occupation.Common to both registered nurses and practical nurses who have left the occupation, are the tendency to take further education and transfer to another occupation in the health sector. In this study half of the female practical nurses who have left the occupation, now work as registered nurses. The vocational training is often a first step in a nursing career.
