The project focuses on the role of the firm and the workplace for understanding sickness absence. While it is the individual worker that becomes ill and potentially stays home from work, this behaviour is strongly affected by characteristics of the firm and workplace, i.e., by what that may be broadly understood as the work environment. Theoretically this is clearly important, and this importance is also supported empirically. Sub-projects will focus on the importance of ownership and management, norms and social interaction, pay setting regimes, and how these aspects are related to sickness absence differences between men and women and between different ethnic groups.
